The myth lives on – even today Bechstein manufactures pianos at the highest level. Our piano factory in Seifhennersdorf, Saxony, builds on the craftsmanship of Carl Bechstein and at the same time uses modern CNC technology to raise the precision of piano-making to an even higher level. Hans von Bulow, the first chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic, declared, "Bechstein is for pianists as Stradivarius and Amati are for violinists." On January 22, 1857, Bulow premiered Liszt's B-minor Sonata on a Bechstein grand piano and thus started a great tradition. Liszt later stated in a letter to Carl Bechstein: "I have now played your instruments and they have maintained their pre-eminence for 28 years."
To date, Bechstein builds instruments at their finest. In the chapter Piano Building Art you can see what a great effort is required of man and material, so that a high-profile grand piano can be produced. Karl Schulze, CEO of C. Bechstein Pianofortefabrik AG, supervises the production. In Seifhennersdorf grand pianos and uprights of the brands C. Bechstein, BECHSTEIN Academy und Zimmermann are manufactured; in Hradec Králové, Czech Republic, W.HOFFMANN brand instruments are produced.
