Adam Carlson – Love Supreme – A John Coltrane Tribute

A Love Supreme Poster

This special show celebrates 50 years since the release of John Coltrane’s finest masterpiece: “A Love Supreme.” Coltrane’s studio recording of this suite has been named one of the best jazz albums of all time, and represents a culmination of Coltrane’s musical genius. This work expresses Coltrane’s gratitude to God for giving him the strength to overcome a heavy drug addiction. It is presented in four movements and features all four instruments of the Classic Quartet. The last movement is a musical narration of Coltrane’s poem “A Love Supreme.”

Lead by Eugene drummer Adam Carlson, this quartet will perform their own rendition of the suite. Together, they hope to bring this spiritual offering to life, mixing their own artistic voices with the original intent of this monumental piece.

About the Band:

Adam Carlson is a graduate of the University of Oregon Jazz Studies program, and has become one of the top “up-and-coming” drummers in Oregon. He has recruited Joe Manis, who has been praised by the Willamette Week for his “intense, updated take on the glorious Rollins-‘Trane tradition.” Joining them is Carlson’s long-time collaborator Torrey Newhart on piano, and Sean Peterson on bass, both of whom earned their Masters Degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Oregon, and have become distinguished members of the Oregon jazz scene.
