REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS & REGULATIONS

Each participant is required to perform two pieces and will be allotted the following amount of time for the performance of both compositions:

Division I: Ages 9 and under (max 8 minutes)
Division II: Ages 10-13 (max 10 minutes)
Division III: Ages 14-18 (max 15 minutes)

Judges reserve the right to cut off performances at their discretion.

The two pieces must be contrasting works for solo piano from two different eras of Western classical music, including Classical, Baroque, Romantic, and Twentieth Century. Music must be performed memorized.

Applicants must bring hard copies of their music (photocopies or books) with minimal markings for the judges.

Contestants will be graded on the following criteria, using a rating scale of 1-5:

Musicianship: They will be judged on their ability to make their piece sound sonorous, showing their command of shadings or phrasing, and levels of expression, elevating the music rather than playing by rote.

Replicating the score:  Performances should show strict adherence to what is written by the composer in the score including stylistic elements.

Technique: Contestants must show they possess the requisite technique in terms of execution of the most challenging passages of a piece, and should display as near to flawless a performance as possible.

Memory: Contestants shall perform their selected pieces without referring to the score.

Performance presence: Contestants are expected to display a professional demeanor, and at the same time to be themselves and to enjoy their time!

Age requirements apply to applicant’s age as of June 7, 2020. Applicants must reside in the United States or Canada.

Judges will be announced in the application for the competition. If a change is made, this will be announced within the Michelle’s Piano showroom prior to the competition.

Students, teachers, parents, and audience members should not approach the judges for any reason before or during the competition.

Assigned audition times should be honored except in extreme circumstances.

Competitors are responsible for their own expenses to participate in the competition, including the cost of their travel.

Contestants should wear professional attire.

They must perform live without sheet music.
